A habitation module or crew cabin is a part which can hold several kerbonauts but is not itself a command module and thus passive. They can be used in space stations and landers to hold the kerbles.
The PPD-10 Hitchhiker Storage Container can hold 4 kerbals inside it, making it ideal for creating space stations. Since a space station doesn't need to hold more than 7 kerbals (most of the time) this is the only part that doesn't store too small amount of kerbals or overshoot the amount of kerbals stored.
The Mk1 Crew Cabin is mostly used for partial space stations, or interplanetary transfer stations.
Lastly, the Mk3 Passenger Module can store up to 24 kerbals at the same time, it is ideal for transporting planes.
