Each class of asteroid has a nominal radius, and the radius of an individual asteroid is a random value in the range of 25% below to 25% above the nominal radius for its class. Furthermore, the mass of an asteroid is simply 0.03 tonnes per cubic meter of volume. Presumably the game considers asteroids as perfect spheres for volume purposes, which would give asteroids a volume of 4/3*pi times their cubed radius, and thus a mass of 0.04*pi times their cubed radius. -- [[User:Nolari|Nolari]] ([[User talk:Nolari|talk]]) 11:50, 29 October 2014 (CDT) | ||

Masses of the classes
Does anyone have a list of mass ranges for each size class? If not should we start listing the size class/mass for asteroids we find on this talk page? Futrtrubl (talk) 02:32, 12 April 2014 (CDT)
- I don't know the ranges for the different classes, but we should list masses for the different classes here and only the extreme values (lowest/highest) in the article. — xZise [talk] 05:01, 12 April 2014 (CDT)
- If this is accurate, then asteroid mass works as follows. -- Nolari (talk) 11:50, 29 October 2014 (CDT)
Data table
Below is the table for the different findings. Images as prove would be nice, although they should not be uploaded all here but instead to places like imgur. I guess to prove the values at least 3 images are required: One of the asteroid showing it's class, one of the vehicle without asteroid showing it's mass, and one with the vehicle attached showing the total mass.
It is possible, that the asteroid's mass is already shown in the Tracking Station. One image is fine then. I'm also added the size (something like diameter) if it is possible to determine that value easily.

F-Class Asteroid
The page includes a (very helpful) list of asteroid classes and their weight ranges. However, at some point, F-class asteroids were added. Would the range still follow that same formula (and thus be 3,828 - 17,154 tons)? I'd edit it myself, but I don't want to assume.
EDIT: Literally just found an I-class for the first time, and now I don't know what is real anymore.

In the VAB
Hello, could anyone tell me how to get asteroids and comets in the VAB? I tried to modify the .cfg myself, but when I use Alt+F12 to teleport the asteroid 100m above to destroy the launchpad, it floated mid-air and the game was saying that it was about to crash, but HOW COULD YOU POSSIBLY CRASH WITH A SPEED OF 0???
Ah, and also the asteroid was just a plain grey 1-meter-sided cube in the VAB…
