Vall being kick out ?

"If N-body simulation was used in the game, Vall would be slingshotted out of the Joolian system within a few days, due to the gravitational influences of nearby Laythe and Tylo." Can someone explain that ? Vall is outside the SOI of these two moons, so I don't really undestand why it would be slingshotted out. The modification have been made by J2good without a source nor a explanation. Indeed (talk) 09:02, 23 March 2015 (CDT)

  • In the real world, SOI refers to "body that has the most gravitational influence". In KSP, there is only ever one body that has any gravitational influence. That is, within a body's SOI, you are only affected by that body's gravity, rather than in the real world, being affected by all bodys nearby. In the game, Vall is not affected by the gravity of Laythe or Tylo. In a real world situation (the n-body simulation) you have to take account of all nearby bodys. The decision to make the game 1-body rather than n-body is probably because if n-body is used, establishing stable orbits would be challenging (you'd be constantly affected by the Sun's gravity), and SOI would largely lose its meaningfulness (and we'd all have to work off frames of reference, which gives me a headache at the best of times). Note: Haven't checked the maths of the person who put that on the wiki but have no reason to doubt it! Bigcalm (talk) 21:02, 16 October 2015 (UTC)
