A prototype rocket (left, controlled remotely) docks with a tanker (right) stationed in Kerbin orbit to refuel prior to departing for solar orbit. This allows the rocket to reuse its second stage as a transfer stage, which enables a heavier payload to be projected into space without requiring an unreasonable launch vehicle.
Note monopropellant reserves: the ship just squeaked through the docking operation due to problems with the RCS configuration. The next version of this ship will have more thrusters and more RCS fuel.
