The Advanced Canard is a revolutionary new development in control surface technology. Since it looks advanced and high-tech, Kerbal engineers thought it would be better than the older standard canard. There are some aspects that are better, because hard maneuvering won't usually cause the canard to fall off, but it's better to be safe than sorry.

The Advanced Canard is a control surface, akin to the AV-R8 Winglet and Standard Canard, except that the Advanced Canard is intended for use on an aircraft. That intention has not stopped space programs all across Kerbin from using the (slightly) lighter and more powerful control surface for a vertical rocket. The Advanced Canard different dimensions from the Standard Canard, most notably a shorter attachment base. They otherwise have identical stats.
