The Inline Advanced Stabilizer is a toggleable module that provides SAS functionality, a sort of autopilot to stabilize and help keep a rocket on course. It contains reaction wheels to provide torque to rotate the craft.

This part currently serves little purpose as it has the same functionality as the Inline Reaction Wheel but is slightly heavier with no advantages over the former. It apparently exists only to preserve backwards compatibility with saved crafts from versions up to 0.20. It used to have the advantage of providing automated SAS functionality, which is now built-in to all command modules. In other words, if extra torque is required, an Inline Reaction Wheel exerts the same torque, but with lower mass. There is also a discussion about both parts in the forum thread Inline advanced stabilizer and Inline reaction wheel confusion in v0.22.

In career mode, having researched the Inline Reaction Wheel is required in order to allow researching the Inline Advanced Stabilizer.

Description

The inline reaction wheel system uses a series of spinning discs that are going "Very Fast", to generate the torque necessary to control a spacecraft. Comes complete with a built in flight computer. Please do not attempt to service this device while it is running.
