An air intake is a part supplying jet engines with air. They can be in a closed or opened position manually or with action groups. Intake air is only generated when they are open but generate more drag. Depending on the height and speed it is possible to close some air intakes and reduce drag. Also when the craft is using only rocket engines all intakes should be closed to reduce drag to the minimum.

The values of masses in the table don't consist the mass of the intake air (5 kg/Air unit), as you can see in the SPH/VAB.
