An antenna allows the communication with Kerbin, when deployed. With version 0.22 the antennae allow transmitting back scientific data without the need to recover the craft on Kerbin. Mods like the RemoteTech add additionally functionality to them.

When it transmits data to the Research and Development facility, it consumes quite an amount of electric charge. The transmission will be suspended when all electric charge is drained, but continue automatically after sufficient power is available. The antenna will also automatically deploy to perform the transmission and retract after completion.

Prior to version 0.22 antennae can't be retracted. Though there was a bug when the craft is accessed from the Tracking Station, will make the antenna blocked in the retracted state.
