A spacecraft arrives in Munar orbit to prepare for landing.

The ship has four distinct parts. From right to left, these parts are:

  • Transfer Stage: Once the second stage of the rocket is discarded in Kerbin orbit, this stage is responsible for propelling the ship to Mun and inserting it into a landing-friendly Munar or Minmal orbit. Once the craft is in a posture to support landing, the transfer stage is released.
  • Lander: Used explicitly for landing on Mun and Minmus, and contains little more than two seats, lots of science equipment, an engine with fuel tanks, landing legs and landing lights. Just to the right of the lander is the collar for the fairing that protects the lander during liftoff.
  • Command Module: Houses the crew during space travel and Kerbin landing. The service bay that contains the vessel's batteries and monopropellant tanks, and supports the solar panels is part of the command module and sits directly above the heat shield.
  • Command Module Engine: As the primary engine once the transfer stage is disposed of, it powers the command module/lander duo for fine tuning the landing orbit, does the legwork during the post-landing command module/lander rendezvous, and powers the ship on the return flight to Kerbin.
