A Monolith is an easter egg that can be found in several places throughout the Kerbol System. They are most likely a reference to the Monoliths from Arthur C. Clarke's Space Odyssey series of novels and film. Many monoliths are buried beneath the terrain, but that depends on your terrain render settings.

In older versions, they had no known function nor collision mesh meaning any Kerbal or vessel could pass through them harm free. In the new versions, however, they do have a collision mesh, so vessels can crash into them and EVA Kerbals can even climb them.

In 1.2, a new type of monolith was added, the Green Monolith. They are spawned randomly on each game, so KerbNet is needed to locate them. However, it is highly beneficial to do so.
