As of 0.21, you can fill the Hitchhiker Storage Container from within the assembly building using the crew tab. When Kerbals are in a storage container, their portraits will not show up in the staging view. But they leave the storage container out by left-clicking the door of the container and clicking on the EVA buttons next to their names.

The HSC has no interior view and doesn't allow Kerbals inside it to go [[IVA]]. The [http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/content.php/150- KSP Weekly game development report from March 19th 2013] included a picture which is likely to be the interior of the Hitchhiker Storage Container in a future version. The "hatches" on the ceiling and floor correspond to the circles seen on the container's exterior, and the viewing portholes appear exactly the same (a circular glass pane with a square around it).

Usage

The Hitchhiker Storage Container is empty by default but can be filled in the VAB by using the crew tab.

The main uses of storage containers are:

  • Crew quarters for space stations

Product description

The PPD-10 is one of the few parts in Kerbal Space Program that is covered in multi-layer insulation.

The HSC was an invention of necessity - how do we store 4 Kerbals on-orbit without any real provisions for return? Who needed this remains a mystery, as do his motivations.

Jebediah Kerman's Junkyard and Spaceship Parts Co.

The IVA view of this shows several boxes which apparently hold provisions. They are labeled as FOOD, NOT FOOD, SCIENCE, MORE SCIENCE, TRASH, JUNK, RUBBISH, REFUSE, BOARD GAMES, TOOTHBRUSHES, and LAUNDRY. A clipboard is also in the IVA view showing the YouTube video thumbnail picture of "Neil" [1] and the official image of KSP's second anniversary. This, combined with the fact that it is a "Large" diameter part, means that it will fit well on a space station.
