Parts are the basic assembly items for rocket and space plane construction in Kerbal Space Program. As a whole, they compose the building materials the player can choose from in the Vehicle Assembly Building and Space Plane Hangar. Parts are split up into seven major categories: Pods, Propulsion, Control, Structural, Aerodynamic, Utility, and Science. The full game has 168 parts to choose from (as of version 0.22.0); the latest demo version (0.18.3) has 25 parts.
The parts below are sometimes called vanilla parts, default parts, or stock parts in order to distinguish them from parts in 3rd-party mods.

Units of measure
Ship mass is specified in metric tons (t), and engine thrust is measured in kilonewtons (kN).
Thrust-to-weight ratio

The thrust-to-weight ratio (TWR) at sea level on Kerbin is calculated by the following equation, which applies only to rockets, because jets use a complicated formula for the lift on a vehicle to vehicle basis.
- is the thrust obtained from the engine, in kilonewtons.
- is the weight of the engine at sea level on Kerbin's surface in kilonewtons.
- is the mass of the engine in metric tons (t).
- is the acceleration at sea level on Kerbin's surface: 9.81 m/s².
This TWR applies only on Kerbin's surface. At other locations the weight differs because the gravitational acceleration is different.
Specific impulse

The specific impulse at is calculated by the following equation. To reduce confusion about the unit of measurement, specific impulse could be given in velocity or time units. In game the specific impulse is specified in seconds.
- is the specific impulse measured in seconds.
- is the thrust obtained from the engine, in kilonewtons.
- is the mass flow rate in Mg/s, which is negative the time-rate of change of the vehicle's mass since propellant is being expelled. The total and dry mass are given in megagrams (metric tons, t).
- is the acceleration at sea level on Kerbin's surface: 9.81 m/s².
The gravitational acceleration at sea level is only a conversion factor between the velocity and time unit. Because of this it won't change when the craft is not at Kerbin's surface. To convert the specific impulse from a time unit into a velocity unit multiply it with to cancel out this factor.
