Ike's Dark Patch

Recently found a large dark patch on Ike's surface, near the equator. Co-ordinates: -13.5791, 26.7627. It's invisible on all map views unless in low space near the surface, much like the Carl Sagan face Tylo. It's almost like the Magic Boulder crashed into the surface. Found in v0.025.0.642, I don't know if it's been present before. Anyone got any idea what this could be? --TankHaven (talk) 09:40, 1 November 2014 (CDT)

The sudden appearance as you zoom in most likely happens when you get close enough for the game to start loading the surface texture map rather than just showing an image of Ike as it appears in map view. (Most, probably all of the planets and moons do this. the most obvious is Eve, where both land and sea visibly change colour). What I'm saying is, this is most likely a simple discrepancy in the images used to render Ike at different details. This may be deliberate, or it may not be. However in the images shown, there does not appear to be any sort of pattern which would suggest an easter egg. --THEMUNROVER 1220, 8th November 2014 (GMT)
Then again there are plenty of terrain glitches listed which can't really be termed easter eggs (in my opinion), so it's probably fine. Perhaps there should be a separate page with terrain glitches. --THEMUNROVER 1205, 26th November 2014 (GMT)
Funny thing: Terrain Glitch ;) Stuff like that should really go to that and not classified as an easter egg (which is a deliberate hidden feature by the devs). — xZise [talk] 09:26, 26 November 2014 (CST)
Haha why did I not think to search for that? Shall I move the relevant stuff from Easter Eggs to Terrain Glitch and leave a link behind then? — THEMUNROVER 1616 26/11/2014 (GMT)
Okay this has been moved to Terrain Glitch. THEMUNROVER (talk) 12:03, 26 November 2014 (CST)

How were these found?

How were these easter-eggs found? Where they found by chance, or were their locations extracted from the game files? I am asking because when it's the latter, it would be pointless to keep looking for more. --Crush (talk) 08:19, 20 February 2013 (CST)

Most of them were found by chance, by viewing the planet at a particularly low orbit, or through the use of a community-developed plugin that detects objects and terrain surface features as you pass over, such as some of the mapping kit expansion plugins, and I'm sure one or two people have found them in the game files. On the subject, I think it might be a good idea for someone to post maps of the locations for these Easter eggs. However it should be on a different page, as some people might not want that big a spoiler. --Ruedii (talk) 12:09, 10 May 2013 (CDT)
I think a gallery would be interesting for this page. As with the spoilers, just the image of the item, but not the exact location. On the other hand, a player that goes to a page titled easter eggs - probably wants the location. That's like saying there are cheat codes, but not saying what they are. Lefick (talk) 21:33, 10 October 2013 (CDT)

What do they mean?

Can these easter eggs get either a reference location, or a description of what/where they are? Like what do the craters mean on Moho? What is the 'magic boulder' on Ike? Where can I find Carl Sagan's face? --Relick (talk) 03:41, 16 March 2013 (CDT)

I added coordinates for everything THEMUNROVER (talk) 12:03, 26 November 2014 (CST)

Easter egg = terrain glitch?

I've noticed a few edits about the "Moholes" on Moho and whether they are actually easter eggs or just a terrain glitch. I think that they are simply a mishap in the terrain (because of the very "pixely" edges) and the "forces" are a bug in the physics engine. Also it isn't quite clear what an "easter egg" is in terms of KSP. I think that the term should be defined a bit clearer somewhere in the article. --Dgelessus (talk) 10:25, 10 May 2013 (CDT)

The "Forces" are probably a bug in the way gravity is handled by the terrain engine. However, I suspect they were intentionally placed there. The square edges are due to the way terrain height is handled in KSP. It has nothing to do with them being accidental. You will notice several ridges on Minmus also have jagged edges.--Ruedii (talk) 05:32, 5 July 2013 (CDT)
Moholes now mentioned on list of easter eggs, Terrain Glitch and Mohole. THEMUNROVER (talk) 12:03, 26 November 2014 (CST)

Spirit's or Curiosity's camera?

Okay this was changed multiple times between Spirit and Curiosity. Now is there any proof of which rover it is actually (and if I'm not mistaken it could be even Opportunity because it is build like Spirit), like a developers comment or because of the physical properties. I haven't been there but Scott Manley and I can't see any sign why it is Spirit or Curiosity. — xZise [talk] 15:34, 4 July 2013 (CDT)

Spirit and Opportunity: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:NASA_Mars_Rover.jpg

Curiosity: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/dc/PIA16239_High-Resolution_Self-Portrait_by_Curiosity_Rover_Arm_Camera.jpg

The camera on Duna: http://i.imgur.com/NMazQkx.png

It's clearly meant to be Curiosity. --Crush (talk) 03:23, 5 July 2013 (CDT)

I'd be inclined to agree. It has a large main lens with two smaller square lenses of different sizes in a binocular arrangement. This is clearly the Curiosity camera.:p.s. Thanks for bringing it to the discussions page when an edit war was brewing. It shows maturity and reason. --Ruedii (talk) 05:37, 5 July 2013 (CDT)
Okay I take only a brief look on Spirit's camera and there it looks like the curiosity. But your file on the Wikipedia make it pretty clear. Thanks for the edit, although I though it would be Spirit's camera, because it is most likely also buried in sand by now. Why aren't any images on this page, it would be easier to compare the easter egg. — xZise [talk] 06:02, 5 July 2013 (CDT)

Gilly's "Easter Egg" Simply a Terrain Bug?

I recently landed at Gilly's "easter egg" (0 degrees north, 0 degrees east). All I saw was a standard "spine" formation of spikey hills. I must ask, how is this an easter egg? The geological feature of spikey hills can be found all around the Kerbol system. With the "easter egg" sitting in between two large craters, it looks more like a terrain bug than an intentional easter egg. Spoiler, just in case.

Color doesn't really match #BADA55

My counter evidence

Hi, I tried to add evidential images, but it doesn't really look BADA55 to me. Are there better images with other lights? — xZise [talk] 12:05, 19 January 2014 (CST)

Best would be to compare with the textures, if it's possible to extract them somehow. (Probably breaking KSP's ToS to distribute on this wiki however). Artorp (talk) 19:39, 19 January 2014 (CST)
Kerbal skin color on left side, the color #bada55 in hex on the right side
The evidence you're looking for is called kerbal_armHands.tex archived within sharedassets0.assets in the KSP_Data folder. It is the skin texture used on kerbals. I extracted it, converted it and blurred the image to get a solid color, then put the color #BADA55 besides it. Kerbals use the color R:203, G:219, B:129; #BADA55 is R:186, G:218, B:85. They are different colors. Artorp (talk) 20:16, 19 January 2014 (CST)
Thank you for your “investigation” :) Interestingly the BADA55 of my image looks “greener“ than your comparison in Firefox but as soon as I'm open them in GIMP they look identical. Strange. — xZise [talk] 06:03, 20 January 2014 (CST)
Glad to help! :) Sounds like an effect of color correction in Firefox, I use ff myself and don't see any difference however the corrections may vary between color different profiles. The color in your picture has slightly less red (b3db54 as apposed to bada55) which may exaggerate the effect. Not sure though, I'm no graphics designer. Artorp (talk) 09:01, 20 January 2014 (CST)
The color #bada55 may be used as the base color, before the skin alterations are added. According to my color tests, the skin varies from 73 degree hue to 71 degree hue. This would indicate a blending between a yellowish color and a greenish color. The greenish color may very well be #BADA55 which is 74 degrees hue. --Ruedii (talk) 20:59, 16 August 2014 (CDT)

Okay somebody changed it to #84D455 which looks like Kerbal colored, but different than the color defined in the comparison image (#84D455 vs 203,219,129). It would be nice to know how the new value was determined. — xZise [talk] 04:52, 27 February 2014 (CST)

Yeah the suggested color doesn't seem to match the Kerbal's skin color at all. If anything #bada55 had a stronger match. I suggest a revert unless a source is provided. --Artorp (talk) 16:43, 1 March 2014 (CST)

Alright, I just color-picked the Kerbal's head colour in Paint.NET and it said the colour was #B3C071, a bit close to #bada55 but could actually be exactly the color, or it could be just fairly close. EDIT: As in the one on the right, the counter evidence image. --Mozziedoo (talk) 01:35, 11 April 2014 (CDT)

Kerbal XX - Orion

Due to a glitch in the current version it is sometimes possible to switch crafts in scenarios. The kerbal XX ships seems to represent constellation's orion pod. Can somebody approve this.

Mysterious & Strange Kerbin Easter Eggs

I tend to make a point of checking on most of the easter eggs on this list for each new version of the game, updating any relevant info. However, I do not recognise these two, both of which were added fairly recently:

  • Mysterious rock, on the continent which looks like Africa, not a terrain rock, but it sits above the ground, likely movable.
  • Strange formations of islands, near the continent which looks like South America.

The Mysterious rock sounds like a glitch I have seen on previous versions where terrain scatter rocks appear floating in mid-air, generally over steep slopes. "Likely moveable" suggests that this has not actually been tested, or could it be a small asteroid that bugged out? Either case would make this not an easter egg. Also, "Strange formations of islands" is very vague, as is the location. A brief search on the forums revealed no further details, including an active thread specifically keeping track of easter eggs. If anyone knows more, please add details. If not, then please say so here. I don't want to delete these without being completely sure they're not actual easter eggs. --THEMUNROVER 10:45, 22 October 2014 (BST)

Try to determine who added that any maybe bug them on their talk pages (so they get notified). If something doesn't look verifiable it should be removed and if that removal was not “justified” there should be then evidence for it. This page shouldn't go like Deep Space Kraken where everybody is just listing physics glitches and adds a funny name :/ . And especially if it's ground scatter, that feature is not finished and as it probably bases on procedural generation it's not even intentional by the developers so defining as an easter egg something based on ground scatter seems dubious to me. — xZise [talk] 19:45, 22 October 2014 (CDT)
That sounds like a plan, but Ghostlyninja doesn't have a talk page. In that case I'll remove the "Mysterious rock" and go on an island hunt tomorrow --THEMUNROVER 23:49, 23 October 2014 (BST)
Just create one. Go to User talk:Ghostlyninja and click the 'Add topic' button. — xZise [talk] 10:16, 24 October 2014 (CDT)
Okay, I've done that. I have so far been unable to find anything that could be described as "strange islands" either. —THEMUNROVER 0943, 28th October 2014 (GMT)
Removed "strange islands" from this page. It would be a terrain glitch anyway THEMUNROVER (talk) 12:03, 26 November 2014 (CST)

Relevance of the Graffiti Rock

I … am not sure there is anything special about this rock. Was this done with terrain scatter activated? If so I'd remove it because what graffiti is there? Maybe a better screenshot would help highlighting the 'graffiti'. — xZise [talk] 20:18, 28 December 2014 (CST)

-New file with clear graffiti added, rock which is mentioned above is believed by me to be identical, however I only looked at it briefly in-game. -ThoDaCuppaJoe 31/12/14

I'm sorry but that doesn't make it better. I don't see how this is … graffiti. It could be just a random stone texture. I also removed the forest because that is terrain scatter which is randomly placed. This does mean by chance there might be multiple trees 'close' together and judging from File:KSC forest.png they aren't even that close.
The main reason I deleted both is that they look more random than intentional and a random feature/bug is not necessarily an easter egg which is placed there by a developer intentionally. So unless a developer confirms that those are intentional easter eggs or there is better proof (like there are no other forests or stones with that texture) I don't think it's easter egg worthy.
Oh and please use more descriptive file names unless you don't want them to be found. — xZise [talk] 21:26, 31 December 2014 (CST)

-Ok, thanks for the info. I still believe that the Graffiti Rock is an Easter egg due to the fact that there is legible writing on it, and as the trees and grass don't appear every game I hold the same opinion for that too. 1/1/15

Could you please clarify what exact legible writing there is on this rock? I cannot see any. This specific "easter egg" must be of terrain scatter origin; with terrain scatter off, I checked the island ENE of the KSC at the exact coordinates given, rovered around for a bit, and even clipped the camera beneath the terrain multiple times to make sure that it wasn't underneath it. I could not find such a rock. If the rock appears in the same exact spot every time after switching terrain scatter on and off multiple times, or if you could tell us what you interpret as writing on the rock exactly says, which may or may not be you seeing things that aren't there, then you may have something. But until then, both the forest and rock are random terrain scatter. --Turkwinif (talk) 09:30, 2 January 2015 (CST)
Please check your settings if Terrain Scatter is set. My guess would be it appears only if it's activated and by default it's not. And just Terrain Scatter which is randomly placed can't be placed intentionally by the devs. Unless a dev tweaked the random number generator, which I'd say is unlikely, it's not a easter egg. Only 'interesting' at most and then the question is what is interesting (I don't like fuzzy definitions). — xZise [talk] 13:49, 2 January 2015 (CST)

Mission Location Name References

I've noticed a lot of missions tell you to go to Location X and do a temperature reading above/below x,000m. I've also noticed that the location's are often named after people. The most obvious one (for me recently) being "Bobak's Whim" (but ive also seen "Bobak's Reach", the names are probably randomly generated). Bobak most likely refers to Bobak Ferdowsi. Many of my other exploration missions are just to locations named with random letters and numbers, and I'm pretty terrible at them, so I avoid them. It's quite possible there are other mission locations named for famous people. Nbisby (talk) 09:29, 7 January 2015 (CST)

Hmm I'm not quite sure. There was a list with all Kerbal names but as you can imagine if those are randomly generated it's (nearly) impossible to list all (and not informative at all). There are two ways: For some Kerbals we have already pages like Bobak Kerman where this trivia could be added (as long as the name of site is not the reason behind the page's creation). Another way (they don't need to exclude) is when there are actually some names predefined to list them, but not those randomly generated. The problem there is how to determine if it's randomly created? There are a lot of important persons related to rocket science or astronomy so it's reasonable to expect that randomly it sometimes generates names which are actually persons in real life. You actually say itself that there are random locations (but they aren't randomly generated like the names of Kerbals to look like words) but I'd say if there is a reasonable list that it could be added (although if it is actually randomly this list will probably go, because we don't need to list all people just because a random function generated them). — xZise [talk] 16:58, 8 January 2015 (CST)
