Can we adopt [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style Wikipedia's manual of style] as our own? — [[User:Elembis|Elembis]] ([[User talk:Elembis|talk]]) 19:02, 2 October 2012 (UTC)
+
There’s been no wiki news for years, and apparently there are still Migration Problems going on 3 years later. Is everything dead? Is this place fixable? Please someone explain to me.
: This makes sense to me, I would assume we want to aim for a quality wiki. That said, I would be careful with sticking to the 'rules' too strictly, after all we should aim to cater for a 'tounge in cheeck' approach, fitting in with the comedy style of the game it self. [[User:Thecoshman|Thecoshman]] ([[User talk:Thecoshman|talk]]) 19:31, 2 October 2012 (UTC)

:: We do need a manual of style, but it needs to be something less formal. We don't need to be a scholarly source, we just need to have a consistent style.  Stuff like links (<code><nowiki>[[IVA]]s</nowiki></code> instead of <code><nowiki>[[IVA|IVAs]]</nowiki></code>, which is enforced by RoboJeb already), tables, and other things that make it mildly easier to edit a page.  -- [[User:N3X15|<span class="squad">N3X15</span>]] ([[Special:Contribs/N3X15|C]] &middot; [[User_talk:N3X15|T]] &middot; [{{fullurl:User:N3X15/Sig|action=edit}} E]) 04:10, 12 October 2012 (UTC)

::: wait... you prefer <nowiki>[[example]]s over [[example]]s</nowiki>? Oh lord! I think the first style looks ugly as sin because you end up with that one letter no part of the link, I much prefer the latter style. as for adopting a formal guide, I agree with you N3X15, as long as we have a consistent style, perhaps a page can be created where some of these guide lines can be added as they arise in very organic way? [[User:Thecoshman|Thecoshman]] ([[User talk:Thecoshman|talk]]) 08:41, 12 October 2012 (UTC)

:::: ah, I did not realise that the pluralising 's' will be considered part of the link, so we can disregard my complaints about that. [[User:Thecoshman|Thecoshman]] ([[User talk:Thecoshman|talk]]) 15:17, 12 October 2012 (UTC)

This is something that will require admin attention. Would it be possible for the 'Tutorials' namespace to be properly added to the system. It would also be usefully if there was a namespace along the line of 'API' or 'DevDocs'. Instructions on how to do this can be found [http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Using_custom_namespaces here]. == English English or American English? ==
+
== With every update coming out, it takes so long to create pages for new content ==

I would assume that American English is the preferred English for this wiki. Though, I think it should be stated clearly so that we can avoid ping-pong edits between American and English English. If we get to vote in this matter, I would prefer English English, on account of being English, but not that fussed overall. It's October 27 now, 3 weeks since KSP 0.25 release. Does it take that long to create dedicated wiki pages for new parts and stock craft? I ended up starting some stubs for the new 0.25 parts.<small>— [[User:Deepspacecreeper|Deepspacecreeper]] ([[User talk:Deepspacecreeper|talk]] • [[Special:Contributions/Deepspacecreeper|contribs]]) 8:27pm, 27 October 2014‎ (PDT)</small>
* I don't see how theatre/theater, etc. would result in pingponging, as either are valid and aren't worth editing over.  Best thing to do would be to leave rules instructing users not to bother editing minor dialect-specific things. As for measurements, we should be using metric anyway, as KSP deals with a lot of science (obviously).  I'll (hopefully) start working on rules tomorrow. -- [[User:N3X15|N3X15]] ([[User talk:N3X15|talk]]) 09:43, 8 October 2012 (UTC)

:I've already a bot which creates all those infoboxes. In theory (if I find the time) it could also create stub part pages so other authors can expand them easier. But currently I haven't time to add that but hopefully with the next release this is going to work. But apart from that, someone has to create them so why not you as you now did? It took some time but if nobody had found the time/muse to do I can't command others to add pages ;) . At the moment, the game doesn't specify units of measure for part masses or engine thrusts. We should agree on what to show in the wiki. There has been '''[[User_talk:Elembis#Units_of_measure|some discussion]]''' on this, but I figured it'd be useful to get some more feedback and hopefully a consensus.

I'm just thinking, maybe rename the kerbal space program wiki to Kerbapedia?Just a suggestion. --[[User:Mozziedoo|Mozziedoo]] ([[User talk:Mozziedoo|talk]]) 03:17, 6 February 2014 (CST)
: I'm starting to think that Elembis's premise 3 was wrong, and rocket parts/kerbals are in ''different'' mass units from the star/planets/moons. Given that we can't push planets around, this seems workable.

:: Considering the game does not specify units, why are we even having this debate? If anything, there should just a page on [[units]] explaining that the game does not define units, but that they appear to be consistent with treating them in kg and N. And let's not forget, working in kg-N or Mg-N does not matter, it is just a different scale, though I would avoid using 'tonne' or 'ton' as it is a stupid term that has a bazillian interpretations. Never known of any cases where someone was wondering if you meant a UK Kg or a USA Kg. This also is some what relevant to my question above, are we aiming for UK English or US English. [[User:Thecoshman|Thecoshman]] ([[User talk:Thecoshman|talk]]) 07:58, 18 October 2012 (UTC)

::: There are multiple reasons to define the units. Several include: the wiki already defined them as kg and N (not physically possible), giving modders formulas to standardize the physical properties of new parts, converting realworld spacecraft into KSP, and above all, making the physics work on paper, the game already uses m/s L/s and meters as units of measure so it is not had to figure out that the units of measure for parts is in 1000's of kg and 1000's of N. I am not sure we should use kg and N, as it will involve a bit of work converting all the in-game part descriptions from tonnes to kg and from kN to N and probably confuse people who are looking at the in-game units and the wiki. Regardless, let's stick with SI as it is the unit already defined in-game for fuel consumption and acceleration. --[[User:Jlmr|Jlmr]] ([[User talk:Jlmr|talk]]) 19:54, 18 October 2012 (UTC)

'''Justification for t and kN (or 1000's kg and 1000's of N)''' This is a condensed version of all my arguments. --[[User:Jlmr|Jlmr]] ([[User talk:Jlmr|talk]]) 20:52, 18 October 2012 (UTC)

*An official NIST/SI publication: http://physics.nist.gov/Pubs/SP330/sp330.pdf states that kilonewton (kN) is a valid SI unit to represent 1000 N and ton (t), while historically a non-SI unit, has been accepted for use in the SI system by [[w:CIPM|CIPM]] as a valid unit to represent 1000 kg for just over a century.

There's plenty of online tools for calculations related to the game (orbits, Δv etc.) and there isn't a forum thread or wiki page that has at least a rudimentary list of them, which I think would be beneficial. If it's ok, I'd like to make one here on the wiki for inclusion on the main page (as it seems the logical place to put it imho) - I don't think the forum would be ideal for this as it would require me (or whoever creates the thread) to be the sole maintainer, unlike the wiki. --[[User:MechaLynx|MechaLynx]] ([[User talk:MechaLynx|talk]]) 22:40, 10 April 2014 (CDT)

== Release Dates:  1.2.2 ==

*We know that the Mk1-2 Command Pod weighs 4 "units" from the in-game description. The command pod is roughly 2 m in height and 2 m in diameter. Calculating it's total volume gives us about 2.09 m3. Let's assume the capsule has 0.05 m (2 in) thick walls and subtract the interior void to get only the volume of the capsule walls. This gives us a volume of 1.80 m3.
+
Main Page lists the release date of 1.2.2 bugfix patch as Nov 1, 2016.<br />
**Knowing the volume of the walls, we can calculate the density of the material making up the capsule, taking the 4 in-game units to mean kg, this comes out to be about 13.79 kg/m3. Unfortunately, is about 72.29 times less dense than water at room temperature and closer in density to most gasses! Perhaps Kerbals have discovered a super strong gas-like substance to make spaceships from? =)
+
Release notes lists release date of 1.2.2 bugfix patch as Dec 6, 2016.<br />
**However, if we take the 4 in-game units to mean metric tons, we get a density of around 13793.10 kg/m3, well within the range of the density of real building materials.
+
Would love to fix, but I'm apparently not 'established'...<br />

*The wikipage on [[Kerbin]] states it has a surface gravity of 9.81 m/s2, roughly that of Earth.
+
== Question ==
**Given this we can calculate the following. If measured in kilograms(kg), a "9 kg" Rockomax X200-16 Fuel Tank on Kerbin, having a surface gravity of 9.81 m/s2, would be roughly the size of a 48 oz coffee tin and only hold about 1.5 L of fuel. Unfortunately for our intrepid Kerbals, 1.5 L of fuel would not provide enough energy to lift a 9 kg payload through 75,000 m of atmosphere, much less a few hundred meters.

**If measured in metric tons, a "9 t" (9,000 kg) Rockomax X200-16 Fuel Tank under the same gravity, being about 0.67 m tall and 2 m in diameter, gives a volume of 2104.87 L, more than enough to hold the advertised 1600 L of fuel. Only a rocket engine with a thrust around 100 kN (100,000 N), could have any chance of lifting the 9 t (9,000 kg) fuel tank.

**Similarly, a substance weighing only 8 kg with a volume of 1,600 L has a density of 5 kg/m3, only about three times greater than the density of gaseous oxygen, and would not make an efficient fuel. Whereas, a fuel weighing 8 t with a volume of 1,600 L has a density of 5000 kg/m3, closer to a realistic rocket fuel.

*On the wiki pages we could just as easily say 4,000 kg instead of 4 t. However, this takes up unnecessary space on the page.

I'm a noob at editing Wikis and this one is kinda complicated, with the data templates and all. Is there guidance somewhere on how to approach it all? I'd like to help out with updating stuff if poss.
 +
Also, queries about two things I have noticed: firstly, edits to templates don't show up in "Recent changes" - is this intentional? Secondly, the recent (1.11) mass changes for some parts caused me to look at their info on the wiki. For the Cupola, I can see that there are now 2 different mass values showing up - the old (now incorrect) one in the main Parts page, and the new one which is in the sidebar thingy on the Cupola's own wiki page. The correct mass has been adjusted within a template by ArnePeirs a few days ago, but the incorrect one is presumably in a different data template... this leads to the fairly obvious question "why is the data stored in more than one place?". :If you can't see edits to templates in "Recent changes" try changing some options in the "Recent changes options" section above the list of changes. As for the all the different data templates, I'm working on an unifaction of all this data but it's hard to track all the different templates used on the pages. I can make sure the templates are all using the same information, but a value that's just copy/pasted from a template can get outdated. --[[User:ArnePeirs|ArnePeirs]] ([[User talk:ArnePeirs|talk]]) 10:14, 28 January 2021 (UTC)

Could we get an update?  There are two new planets now, and I imagine people are being turned away if the wiki looks that outdated.

I have noticed that many of the planet icon images are way out of date (especialy Jool's), and with the relase of ksp 2, have we considered updating them to higher res/quality? - [[User:RoboSpace|RoboSpace]] ([[User talk:RoboSpace|talk]]) 12:59, 28 February 2024 (UTC)

Is this Wiki dead or something?

There’s been no wiki news for years, and apparently there are still Migration Problems going on 3 years later. Is everything dead? Is this place fixable? Please someone explain to me.

-Harry_Robinson

Dead, no. Grossly under-resourced since eg: lots of people are volunteers with sometimes limited interest and/or time due to their studies, yes. UmbralRaptor (talk) 03:07, 15 March 2018 (UTC)

Oh. Thanks for the reply though. I’m gonna try to help out then; I’d feel bad if I didn’t after how much this wiki has helped me over the years.

With every update coming out, it takes so long to create pages for new content

It's October 27 now, 3 weeks since KSP 0.25 release. Does it take that long to create dedicated wiki pages for new parts and stock craft? I ended up starting some stubs for the new 0.25 parts.Deepspacecreeper (talkcontribs) 8:27pm, 27 October 2014‎ (PDT)

I've already a bot which creates all those infoboxes. — xZise [talk] 13:58, 30 October 2014 (CDT)

The Wiki has become extremely sluggish and laggy

Yep, something is wrong, and it's diminishing my edit output. — Preceding unsigned comment added by HamShanky (talkcontribs) 01:03, 20 September 2014‎ (UTC)

Hmmm it looks for me not worse than prior to the maintenance. — xZise [talk] 04:25, 20 September 2014 (CDT) (10 hrs later)
If it's now better, please let us know. Maybe the wiki was actually laggy 10 hours ago. — xZise [talk] 04:27, 20 September 2014 (CDT)
It is now not laggy, I only have to wait 2 seconds compared to 2 minutes or looking at a 500 error. It's better now. --HamShanky (talk) 21:25, 21 September 2014 (CDT)
Could be that there was additional stress on the servers shortly after they have become available again. — xZise [talk] 03:46, 23 September 2014 (CDT)

CoolNavBoxes are out of date

Could we get an update? There are two new planets now, and I imagine people are being turned away if the wiki looks that outdated.

Recent events wrong dates

Recent event for 1.2.2 is incorrect, stated as 1 Nov 2016, should be 6 Dec 2016. Front page is semi-protected, soI can't change it.

Recent events 0.19 and 0.18 dates are wrong as they were released in 2012. Someone with more info about those could fix the dates — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tuupertunut (talkcontribs)

That is not correct. 0.18.2 was released 2012 but every update after that was released 2013. I've been playing KSP since December 2012 with 0.18.2. Also version history#v0.18.3 .28Demo.29 agrees with me. — xZise [talk] 10:24, 22 October 2013 (CDT)
Strange. I have started in 0.19 and remember reading somewhere from this wiki that 0.19 was released in August/September 2012. Could have been a mistake in wiki or in my head, but anyways you seem right. - Tuupertunut (talk) 18:12, 22 October 2013 (CDT)
Here is the working link for the release of 0.19: http://forum.kerbalspaceprogram.com/content/148xZise [talk] 19:42, 22 October 2013 (CDT)

Name change of the wiki?

I'm just thinking, maybe rename the kerbal space program wiki to Kerbapedia?Just a suggestion. --Mozziedoo (talk) 03:17, 6 February 2014 (CST)

Fan-made Tool section

There's plenty of online tools for calculations related to the game (orbits, Δv etc.) and there isn't a forum thread or wiki page that has at least a rudimentary list of them, which I think would be beneficial. If it's ok, I'd like to make one here on the wiki for inclusion on the main page (as it seems the logical place to put it imho) - I don't think the forum would be ideal for this as it would require me (or whoever creates the thread) to be the sole maintainer, unlike the wiki. --MechaLynx (talk) 22:40, 10 April 2014 (CDT)

Go ahead and create such a repository. There was actually such a list, although pretty short, on addon. Now it was removed, because the lists on there weren't really maintained, but you can find it here. If it's good I'll add it to the main page. You can also add a link to Tutorials. — xZise [talk] 10:01, 12 April 2014 (CDT)
I've started working on it, should be done within the next couple of days, time permitting. I'd like to delay posting a link until it's ready if that's ok. (edit: I just realised it's super easy to get a link lol :P was just worried about trollish interference, but I guess that's a moot point now) --MechaLynx (talk) 21:39, 14 April 2014 (CDT)
Uh, dude the page has been ready for some while now. I know you're busy but it's just standing there being useless. I'll add a link to Tutorials soon so that there's at least something linking to it (I think it's good enough to be linked somewhere on the wiki, but I won't add a link on the main page unless you or some other mature member does so). --MechaLynx (talk) 10:04, 29 April 2014 (CDT)
So I've added your two articles. — xZise [talk] 13:06, 29 April 2014 (CDT)
Thanks mate. I only made one article though :P Is it ok if I announce it on the forums so that tool authors know that it's there? --MechaLynx (talk) 19:07, 29 April 2014 (CDT)
Ah I though you were talking about addon. Either way they are now up there. And about the forum, do as you like. — xZise [talk] 12:44, 30 April 2014 (CDT)
No problem. I actually just made an edit to addon that I wanted to make a while ago :P might be putting some work on addon information in the future now that I've lost my mediawiki virginity :P --MechaLynx (talk) 21:17, 30 April 2014 (CDT)

Release Dates: 1.2.2

Main Page lists the release date of 1.2.2 bugfix patch as Nov 1, 2016.
Release notes lists release date of 1.2.2 bugfix patch as Dec 6, 2016.
Would love to fix, but I'm apparently not 'established'...

Question

HOW THE HECK DO I DELETE AN ACCOUNT?

You'll want to contact an admin, particularly if it's your own account or to point us at a spammer to ban. I am available in the #KSPOfficial IRC channel on esper.net much of the time, and there's also a wiki section on the forum. UmbralRaptor (talk) 02:03, 28 July 2017 (UTC)

Add news

1.4, tentatively named AWAY WITH WORDS: MKII, has been released.

How to edit data list

In the version of the game I have, the Stratus-V RCS tanks are made by Stratus Corporation, not found by the side of the road. How do I change this?

Making History Expansion

How do we let people visually see that a page is about the Making History expansion and not the stock game? Do we use a notice box and mention it in the first line of the page? --Olympic1 (talk) 00:31, 14 March 2018 (UTC)

Template questions...

I'm a noob at editing Wikis and this one is kinda complicated, with the data templates and all. Is there guidance somewhere on how to approach it all? I'd like to help out with updating stuff if poss. Neilski (talk) 19:15, 23 December 2020 (UTC)

If you can't see edits to templates in "Recent changes" try changing some options in the "Recent changes options" section above the list of changes. As for the all the different data templates, I'm working on an unifaction of all this data but it's hard to track all the different templates used on the pages. I can make sure the templates are all using the same information, but a value that's just copy/pasted from a template can get outdated. --ArnePeirs (talk) 10:14, 28 January 2021 (UTC)

Why is “Dres” In the planet list?

Dres is in the planet list on the main page even though it is considered a dwarf planet. If dwarf planets should be added in the planet list, Why isn’t Eeloo in the planet list. I would like to know the answer to my question.
By the way, The planet list is that black box in the main page with all the planets in them.

For me every planet is shown in the planet list. If you can't see Eeloo, try to scroll to the right. --ArnePeirs (talk) 10:03, 28 January 2021 (UTC)

please fix

When will the Upload file page get fixed? I have so many photos to add to my pages I am working on. Wither Slayer five thousand 13:31, 11 February 2021 (UTC)

To edit the summary box on the right hand side of a page, go to the page of the summary box, not the main page

KSP2 and this wiki

Will this wiki cover KSP2, or will it focus solely on KSP 1? There's already pages with teased KSP2 content (e.g. Gurdamma), which are nice to have right now. However, it doesn't seem feasible to continue this long-term; KSP2 will inevitably have differences from KSP1, which can lead to contradicting information on the wiki. AlpacaMall (talk) 05:18, 31 August 2021 (UTC)

I think it might just cover KSP, but you would have to talk to the people who run the wiki. Ento da Lizzerd 11:55, 10/12/21 (MST)

Maybe we could make infoboxes at the start of Articles if it conflicts with other info - like saying

This information may contradict other information on KSP1/KSP2, the article you are viewing is on KSP1/KSP2, you can access the other version by clicking Here --Computed 079 (talk) 03:33, 1 October 2022 (UTC)

Based on what I've seen so far, KSP 2 will be merged with original articles, however, there will be titles to help tell what is related to each game, and articles for planets that don't exist in KSP 1 will be added to a new article. I don't know about parts, as some are the same, and some are very different. Should I add new articles for the KSP 2 parts, or update the current ones? - RoboSpace (talk) 13:08, 28 February 2024 (UTC)
