It seems unfathomable that anyone would challenge Kerner Vun Braun, Kerbal's greatest rocket scientist.  After all, the Kerbal Space Program (KSP) is about power.  Brute power.  And that power is what Dr. Vun Braun harnessed in earnest.

# '''Build Your Rocket'''
There was a great debate inside the KSP about the best way to get to the Mun.  Two camps had emerged.  The proper and correct camp of Dr. Vun Braun and that of the upstart and "finesse-oriented" camp of Jon K. Koubolt.

Dr. Vun Braun advocated a direct approach to the Mun.  It was logical and fit with the view of the established KSP management team.  A large, powerful booster launching a complete lander with its own propulsion, landing equipment and re-entry pod.  It would land on the Mun and launch from its surface to return directly to Kerbin.  Then and only then would the spacecraft be separate and the crew capsule return to a successful splashdown.

Dr. Jon K. Koubolt, on the other hand, argued such an approach was risky and wasteful of fuel and resources.  He advocated for a docking of two spacecraft in Kerbin orbit.  A crew travel and return vehicle and a dedicated lander to go to the Munar surface.  Kerbals would transfer to the lander once in Munar orbit, detach from the main spacecraft, descend, land, launch from the Munar surface, dock '''again''' in ''Munar'' orbit, boost back to Kerbin, undock and finally re-enter the atmosphere for a successful landing.  He called this technique "Munar Orbit Rendezvous".

Naturally, the KSP management felt that his was a well-intentioned but lonely voice in the wilderness and saw to it Dr. Koubolt received a well-deserved (and long) vacation.

This tutorial walks you through Dr. Vun Braun's famous Munar landing approach. It shows how the power of KSP components are the best solution to the problem of getting around the Solar System.

It needs enough Delta-V to launch a lander 12 million meters straight up with a little more for setting up orbit. Besides that limitation, build to your hearts content! Just remember to test your design for flaws, (e.g., accidentally decoupling 2 stages at once.)

While your apoapsis gets higher, you might notice that the path will not be perfectly straight up. This is due to the rotation of Kerbin. This needs no correction, but burning slightly west should nullify the effect.

Direct-Ascent Mun Landing Tutorial

This method for traveling the Mun is simpler and does not require setting up orbit around Kerbin. It is simply blasting straight up until you reach the Mun's SOI.

Steps

  1. Build Your Rocket

It needs enough Delta-V to launch a lander 12 million meters straight up with a little more for setting up orbit. Besides that limitation, build to your hearts content! Just remember to test your design for flaws, (e.g., accidentally decoupling 2 stages at once.)

  1. Wait it out

After you have built, saved, and tested your rocket and lander, go to the tracking station and timewarp until the Mun is approximately 45˚ behind the space center.

Alternative place your rocket on the launchpad, set the Mun as your target and timewarp until the purple target circle crosses the 270 degree heading / 45 degree pitch lines on your nav-ball.

  1. Launch!

If you don't already have your rocket on the launchpad, launch it. Then simply burn straight up until you encounter the Mun's SOI. Then cut the engine and timewarp to the encounter point. While your apoapsis gets higher, you might notice that the path will not be perfectly straight up. This is due to the rotation of Kerbin. This needs no correction, but burning slightly west should nullify the effect.

  1. Final Steps and Landing

When the rocket reaches the encounter point, set up orbit around the Mun to avoid landing on the dark side, which is much harder. Finally, deorbit the lander so it will land on the light side, and land.

Congratulations!

You have successfully landed! Now go make a Muncastle.
