Accident Report

Orbiter 1 with Jebediah Kerman fell to the ground north-northwest, emergency separation was successful, but parachute deployment was late. Tip ground impact was 19.5m/s. The forward FL-T200 tank and second stage heatshield were destroyed. The spacecraft heatshield and SC-9001 absorbed the impact for Jebediah, who escaped without injury. The pad has no visible damage

Cause

The vehicle was 21.2m tall, section diameter of 1.25m, had 15 vertical joints and a base of support consisting of three 1.25m sections and two winglet tips. The first problem is that the vehicle is too flexible along its X axis. The second is that its base of support is insufficient. Both of these problems need to be solved for the next attempt.

Vehicle Design

First Stage

The first stage consists of 1 BACC solid rocket motor flanked by two RT-10 motors fired in parallel. an analysis of a serial-mode first stage where the RT-10s fire first is also provided. Stability is ensured by aft-mounting the two RT-10 motors and having two AV-T1 winglets. It is attached using a TR-18A Stack Decoupler. The first stage is not reusable.

Second Stage

The second stage consists of six FL-T200 bipropellant tanks feeding an LV-T45 engine stabilized by four Basic Fins, two aft-mounted Mk2-R parachutes, protected by a Small Heat Shield and attached by TR-18A decouplers to the first and third stages. It is intended for downrange recovery (as described on the page for Episode 1.

Third Stage

Spacecraft

A Mk1 Command Pod and SC-9001 Science Jr landed using two Mk2-R parachutes.
