The Experiment Storage Unit is used by Kerbals and unmanned probes to store science experiments. These can be stored until they are transmitted or brought back to Kerbin. In career mode, it is available with Basic Science, at level 4 of the technology tree.

Product description

After discovering that old snack boxes were also really effective at storing mystery goo and data tapes, Kerbal scientists created the Experiment Storage Unit to help Kerbalnauts bring their valuable science back to Kerbin, while avoiding the hazards of reentry, rough landings, and Jeb's piloting skills.

Usage

With experiments stored in a craft - science results in environmental sensors or reports in crewed modules (e.g. command modules) - the Storage Unit's action menu can be used to select "Container: Collect All", automatically transferring all experiments into the Storage Unit. They also collect experiments stored in other Storage Units.

Alternatively, experiments can be transferred in one at a time, by using the action menu of each part where they are stored, selecting "Transfer Data" and then selecting the Storage Unit when it is highlighted in light blue. Or a Kerbonaut on EVA, near by, can select the Storage Unit externally to "Store Experiments", depositing all that they are holding.

Once experiments are stored in the Storage Unit, "Review Stored Data" can be used to select which to discard, keep, transmit or process in the Mobile Processing Lab MPL-LG-2 (if you have one attached to your craft). Or the module can simply be recovered on Kerbin to gain the full science value of all the experiments it contains.

All stored experiments can be transferred, together, to another Storage Unit by selecting "Container: Transfer Data", then selecting another module highlighted in light blue, which should be able to receive them all. Kerbals on EVA can also "Take Data", to transfer all experiments to themselves.

Limitations

Experiment Storage Units can not collect or store duplicate experiments (the same type done in exactly the same biome).

Alternative Parts

Four of the high end probe cores have the capabilities of the Experiment Storage Unit built in, so can be used in the exactly the same way, via the same interface options:

Also note that Kerbals can each hold just as many experiments by collecting them from Storage Units, or separately from other parts (although only scientists can run and refresh experiments on EVA). All experiments they hold can then be deposited into a crewed command module by selecting "Store Experiments", when outside on EVA. Entering through a hatch automatically transfers all experiments held by a kerbal into the crewed part. These modules will not accept duplicate experiments either, forcing them to be discarded upon entry, except for the Mobile Processing Lab MPL-LG-2 which can store an unlimited amount of copies in this way.

Note that crewed modules can not transfer the experiments stored in them directly to other parts of a craft, like the Storage Units can.
