A structural element is any part in the Structural section of the part menu. They ussually have a high impact tolerance, which makes them good to use for lithobraking.

Usage

As mentioned above, structural parts can be used for lithobraking, as most of them have an impact tolerance of 80 m/s; their main use, however is to provide a radial mounting point for parts that otherwise would have to be placed in-line with the rocket body, such as most engines.

Structural parts can be divided into 3 main categories; Adapters, couplers and struts, Beams, panels and radial elements, and Ground support.

Adapters, couplers and struts

These are parts that adapt from one radial size to another, such as the FL-A10 Adapter, which adapts from the tiny to small radial sizes. This category also includes couplers, a part that divides one node into 2 or more nodes, usually of the same size.

Beams, panels and radial elements

The parts in this caegory mostly resemble metal beams as their name suggests. These can be radially mounted to allow other parts to be placed, used for lithobraking, or decoration. Panels on the other hand are large, flat metal squares that can be used to give custom shapes to a craft, or be used for lithobraking as well.

Ground support

This isn't really much of a category, as it only includes the TT18-A Launch Stability Enhancer, ussually used to provide support to a large rocket before it lauches. Despite its 100 m/s impact tolerance, it can't be used for lithobraking, as it's impossible to life it off the launchpad.
