Kerbal scientists know that learning about the magnetic field of a celestial body can yield all sorts of interesting insights into what's going on inside it - but spacecraft also emit magnetic fields, especially when operating their electronics and electromechnical actuators.  And for some reason, the other engineers don't just want to turn off the entire spacecraft or build it out of plastic.  So, as a fall back position, Experimental Engineering group has stuck this sensitive magnetometer on an extensible boom.  Warning:  Warranty on the boom will be voided if you try to use it anyplace besides the vaccuum of space.
