This is a basic mock-up of a Free Return, showing where the burn should take place and how the different orbital tracks should interact. It is colour coded as follows, with the lighter/greyer colours representing what would have happened without the next interaction.

1. Red - Insertion to space 2. Blue - Primary orbit 3. Green - Transfer Orbit taking vehicle off the blue track. 4. Pink - vehicle enters SOI of the moon / orbiting object and is deviated from the green eliptical orbit, reducing periapsis to below the surface of the original celestial body.
