I made a small update; I was able to perform a round-trip Mun lander mission a few times in a row in both 0.25 and 0.90.  It's not the easiest thing to do, but the changes to the Mainsail Isp and Poodle mass reduction (as stated above) all contribute to making it possible.

Maybe this article needs a radical rewrite: as (0.24) the mainsail became more efficient and the poodle lighter: 1: reaching the stable orbit with the 1st stage (the booster stages not counted) with a real gravity turn (real - not those stupid 45 degrees at 10km-like) possible. 2: Landing on the Mun and the return is possible (but only with excellent maneuvering, using atmospheric brake)
