An air intake is a part supplying jet engines with air. They can be in a closed or opened position and generate only intake air when opened but generated more drag. Depending on the height and speed it is possible to close some air intakes and reduce drag.
Also when the craft is in high altitudes and has to use rocket engines all intakes should be closed to reduce drag to the minimum.
