An antenna allows the communication with Kerbin, when deployed. With version 0.22 the antennae allow transmitting back scientific data without the need to recover the craft on Kerbin. Mods like the RemoteTech add additionally functionality to them. When they transmit data to the Research and Development facility, it consumes quite an amount of electric charge. This transmission will be suspended when all electric charge is drained, but continue automatically when sufficient power is available.
Prior to version 0.22 antennae can't be retracted. Though there was a bug when the craft is accessed from the Tracking Station, will make the antenna blocked in the retracted state.
