Abbreviations and acronyms

This page lists many abbreviations, acronyms and initialisms that are used frequently to communicate more quickly, but can confuse new players or players who are not familiar with them.

- Advanced Grabbing Unit
- Ap
- Apoapsis, highest point in an orbit.
- B9
- B9 Aerospace addon
- BTSM
- Better than starting manned, A popular game and tech tree overhaul.
- CM
- Command Module, a transfer ship that delivers a Lander Module to orbit around some body, then waits there and takes it completely or only the crew home again. Not to be confused with command modules.
- CoL, COL
- Center of Lift
- CoM, COM
- Center of Mass
- CoT, COT
- Center of Thrust
- CTT
- Community Tech Tree , A tech tree expansion used by many popular mods.
- DRE
- Deadly ReEntry - an addon, simulates the atmospheric entry heat effects.
- dV, Δv
- Delta-V, a measure of the ship's propulsive energy.
- EPL
- Extra-Planetary Launchpads, A unique mod which adds a variety of parts and minable resources used to build rockets away from the KSC.
- EVA
- ExtraVehicular Activity - making Kerbals leave the craft: spacewalks, landings, etc.
- FAR
- Ferram Aerospace Research - an addon, gives realistic aerodynamics.
- GUI
- Graphical User Interface
- HKO
- High Kerbin Orbit
- HSC
- Hitchhiker Storage Container - The a PPD-10 Hitchhiker Storage Container
- ISP, Isp, Isp
- Specific impulse, more accurately Isp but that's hard to do on the forum. A measure of rocket engine efficiency, usually given in seconds. The higher the value, the more efficient the engine.
- IVA
- IntraVehicular Activity - the pod view and controls of an individual Kerbal.
- KAS
- Kerbal Attachment System - an addon, gives winches, struts and pipes that add to KIS
- KER
- Kerbal Engineer Redux - a diagnostic addon
- KIS
- A modthat allows for parts to be attached/moved/stored or otherwise manipulated on EVA, formerly KAS.
- KSP
- Kerbal Space Program!
- KSPI-E
- KSP Interstellar - Extended, A mod that adds abercurbie drives, antimatter and other Sci-Fi technologies for use in KSP
- KSC
- Kerbal Space Center
- LES
- Launch Escape System
- LFB
- Liquid Fuel Booster - like the LFB KR-1x2.
- LKO
- Low Kerbin Orbit
- LM
- Lander Module, paired with a Command Module and which lands on the body.
- LMC
- Left-Mouse-Click
- MKS,OKS,UKS
- Modular Koloniation System , A very popular mod made by roverdude which adds a variety of new base parts desingned to be used with EPL and/or USI-LS.
- NEAR
- Neophyte's Elementary Aerodynamics Replacement, an addon gives more realistic aerodynamics model, a simpler version of FAR.
- NFT
- Near Future Technology, a set of 5 part packs based off modern or very Near-Future technologies.
- Pe
- Periapsis, lowest point in an orbit.
- RCS
- Reaction Control System
- RO
- Realism overhaul, A complete overhaul of the KSP system to make it a highly realistic experience (Very advanced).
- RSS
- Real Solar System - an addon with solar system of our size...
- RTG
- Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator
- RUD
- Rapid, Unplanned Disassembly. Usually happens when there are not enough struts or it collides with something. See also catastrophic failure.
- SoI
- Sphere of influence, which are the frames of reference. The trajectory in the current sphere of influence is shown blue on the map view.
- SA
- Sub-Assembly (in VAB/SPH)
- SAS
- Stability Augmentation System or (jokingly) Sickness Avoidance Solution/Scheme/System
- SMA
- Semi-Major Axis
- SPH
- Space Plane Hangar
- SRB
- Solid Rocket Booster
- SSTO
- Single-stage-to-orbit
- TSTO
- Two-stage-to-orbit
- TVC
- Thrust Vector Control
- TWR
- Thrust-to-weight ratio, must be greater than 1 to overcome gravity, unless already in space.
- VAB
- Vehicle Assembly Building
- VTOL
- Vertical take off and landing
