The Science game mode is one of the tree modes available in Kerbal Space Program. It is an intermediate choice between "freestyle" Sandbox mode, and the heavily resource dependent Career mode. The main point of the Science game mode is the scientific activities, while the player not has to deal with contracts, funds and reputation system, as in a career game. This game mode is essentially same with the career mode before the release of version 0.24.

Overview

Unlike the sandbox game Research and Development is opened (as in career mode), and has to do missions and perform scientific experiment for science points. Those yield Science points which can be used in the Research and Development facility where new parts can be “researched”, which is immediately unlocking all parts of that technology tree node. Because the player can use only parts which are already unlocked, every game starts with the Start node. And unlike career game the developed parts are free, and a there is no monetary system, there is not has to deal with contracts of the different agencies, and there is no reputation too. As a result of this, the Mission Control is closed. Due to missing contracts, the player has to write off the science points derived from contracts too.

Worth to know: Stock crafts are not available in this game mode.

This type of game and the career has the same phases. At the beginning of the game, the player perform minor missions around Kerbin for yielding science points for the development needed for a moon missions. The second phase is Mun and Minmus missions gaining enough science points for reaching the technological level of the interplanetary missions.
