The RE-J10 Wolfhound liquid fuel engine is an efficient upper stage engine.

Usage

The Wolfhound's vacuum specific impulse is significantly higher than any other stock/DLC bipropellant engine, making it one of the most effective engines for deep space travel.

It has higher thrust, but a lower thrust-to-weight ratio, than other vacuum-oriented bipropellant engines such as the Poodle and Terrier. So to some extent the Wolfhound bridges the gap between those engines and the liquid-fuel-only Nerv, which has a much higher Isp and much lower TWR.

Trivia

Real-world comparison

The Wolfhound was inspired by the American AJ10-137 engine used for the Apollo SPS. Other variants of the AJ10 were also used for the Space Shuttle's Orbital Maneuvering System and on the Orion service module.

Unlike the Wolfhound, the AJ10 engines are quite lightweight, and they don't have exceptional specific impulse. (Rather than the liquid hydrogen, they use less energy-dense hydrazine-based hypergolic fuels, for storage and reliable multiple firings on longer missions.)
