This landing gear contains a small electric motor that produces a small amount of forward thrust (and consumes a large amount of electric charge) when steering. It is very good for changing direction quickly, and (unlike the [[LY-10 Small Landing Gear]]) still steers well when there is no electric charge remaining.{{citation needed}}

The LY-05 Steerable Landing Gear is a small, non-retractable landing gear part.

Product description

Simple wheel with steering actuation. It has become evident that aerodynamic control surfaces don't offer much control while slowly taxiing on the ground. Hopefully these wheels will reduce the number of low altitude low speed collisions with buildings. And Kerbals.

Usage

The LY-05 Steerable Landing Gear is the smallest of the landing gear parts. The practical load limit for a single LY-05 wheel is about 2 tonnes on Kerbin. Unlike other landing gear, the LY-05 has no electric light, and cannot brake. As its name implies, it is one of the landing gear that can steer.

The LY-05 works well when used with the LY-01 Fixed Landing Gear. When combined, the LY-05 provides steering to an aircraft, while the LY-01 provides braking. This setup resembles that of small, single-engine aircraft (e.g. a Cessna 172). The LY-05 is best suited for these small aircraft; on larger, faster planes, their inability to be retracted will result in a lot of drag, and their low heat tolerance of 1000 K means that they will easily overheat and explode.

Like other landing gear, the LY-01 has no motor; thrust must be provided by another source, such as jet or rocket engines.
