Usage

As the name suggests, the LY-01 Fixed Landing Gear is a simple fixed landing gear part. It resembles the real-life main gear found on several single-engine propeller-driven aircraft (e.g., a Cessna 172). It is rather small; the practical load limit for a single LY-01 wheel is about 2.5 tonnes on Kerbin. Takeoff load limit can be a little higher, depending on the state of the runway.

Unlike the retractable landing gear, the LY-01 does not have an electric light, and cannot steer.

Because of its unique design, it seems rather unusual when used in combination with many of the larger landing gear (e.g. the LY-10 Small Landing Gear). However, it works well when used with the LY-05 Steerable Landing Gear, likely to create small aircraft (similar to the Cessna). The LY-05 can steer, allowing the plane to turn on the ground; the LY-01 can brake, allowing it to control its speed.

As the LY-01 Fixed Landing Gear is non-retractable, it is a poor choice for high speed aircraft; while other landing gear can be stowed after takeoff, the LY-01 cannot, and will cause a lot of drag. In addition, it has a low heat tolerance of 1000 K, and may overheat and explode when used on extremely fast SSTO craft.
