The Mk16-XL Parachute module is a parachute part which, once deployed in the atmosphere, generates drag to slow down attached parts. As it relies on drag alone, it is only useful on planets and moons with a suitably dense atmosphere, such as Kerbin. It can be relied on to bring a Mk 1-2 Command Pod safely down to Kerbin's surface. Its properties are similar to the Mk16 Parachute but the Mk16-XL has a higher mass. Because KSP's drag simulation depends both on mass and the drag coefficient, this parachute can be relied upon to generate as much drag as three Mk16 Parachutes.

Usage

Standard parachutes open in two stages: partial and full deployment. Partial deployment is supposed to keep the craft falling at a manageable speed, without taking forever to reach the ground. Full deployment is supposed to slow the craft all the way to a (hopefully) nice safe landing. The parachutes' efficiency depends of atmospheric density (requires a minimum air pressure of 0.01 atm), so they will not work or deploy in vacuum (i.e. in space or on small celestial bodies without atmosphere, such as the Mun).

This parachute replaces two radial mount parachutes and a nosecone. If you add it up, its mass is more than those three things combined - so it may seem not to make sense to use this XL version. However, the total drag is equal to just one radial parachute, which more than makes up for the extra mass.
