The Magnetometer Boom is a scientific instrument used to analyze magnetospheres. It can perform a Magnetometer Report.
When playing in career mode, it is available with Electronics, at the seventh tier of the technology tree.
Product description
“ | Magnetic fields are all around us. Kerbal scientists know that learning about the magnetic field of a celestial body can yield all sorts of interesting insights into what's going on inside it - but spacecraft also emit magnetic fields, especially when operating their electronics and electromechanical actuators. For some reason engineers just don't want to turn off the entire spacecraft, or build it out of plastic, so the Experimental Engineering group solved the issue by sticking this sensitive magnetometer on an extensible boom. Usage
The Magnetometer Boom can be radially mounted on a vessel. Once placed, it can be extended by clicking "Extend Boom" in the right-click menu. When fully extended, it has a length of approximately 6.1 meters. The "boom" of the Magnetometer Boom can collide with terrain and other parts, and can be used to push or lift a spacecraft. However, the boom can be broken by aero forces, or on collision.
A broken Magnetometer Boom can be repaired by an Engineer on EVA, consuming one EVA Repair Kit.

Like other scientific instruments, right-clicking on the Magnetometer Boom will reveal an option to "Run Magnetometer Report". The boom must be extended in order to perform the experiment; if retracted, the boom will automatically extend before performing the report. It can only hold one experiment at a time; the held report must be removed (through a Kerbal on EVA, Experiment Storage Unit, or through transmitting) before a new one can be performed. (The boom will retract upon removing the report.)
Unlike other instruments, the Magnetometer Boom can only collect two experiments per celestial body; one from low space, and one from high space. In addition, with its copy percentage of 100%, bringing a single report back to Kerbin will collect all available science points. This means that it's easy to quickly collect all possible science with the boom.
Trivia
- Due to the extended boom's hitbox, a downward-facing Magnetometer Boom makes for an excellent lithobraking device.
