The AV-R8 Winglet is a module that adds drag to help stabilize a rocket during flight. Unlike the AV-T1 Winglet, the AV-R8 is a control surface, allowing for greater control inside planetary atmospheres.

Usage

Placing too many winglets may end up producing too much drag, adding stress to your rocket and making it more difficult to control. Winglets provide better stability when placed aft, though automated control systems (e.g.: ASAS) can deal with winglets on the forward parts of a rocket.

The AV-R8 can enhance both maneuverability and stability in atmospheres, but is of limited use in space. Between 0.12 and 0.13.3, The AV-R8 Winglet was commonly used as a landing leg, though has largely been replaced by dedicated landing legs.

Winglets are sometimes used as radiators, to keep SRBs from overheating.

Product description

The R8 Active Control Winglet series marked the debut of Kerlington Model Rockets in the Spacecraft engineering world. These winglets are equipped with movable pivots, which allow them to swivel and act as control surfaces. This feature was considered a huge advancement in control technology and most agree that it made Kerlington staff and R8 fans simply unbearable to be around.
