A cockpit, Command Pod, or probe body is necessary in order to build a spaceplane or spacecraft.
Usage
the Mk2's size 1 (1.25 meter) design allows to fit other size 1 parts while still allowing construction on the frontal part of the cockpit. RCS or SAS modules are commonly placed here.
