The LY-10 Small Landing Gear (formerly known as the Small Gear Bay) is a retractable wheel primarily used on atmospheric planes, but may may be used on other objects that need to roll.

Usage

The LY-10 Small Landing Gear allows planes to roll on the ground instead of sliding and (most likely) exploding. They can also be used to create rovers that roll on planet surfaces. Since 0.18, the Small Gear Bay comes with electric lights, but these lights don't drain energy.

Despite the game presenting them among the rover wheel parts in the editors, there are some important differences between them. The landing gear wheels only have tiny electric motors, so vehicles using them must have another means of acceleration. Since planes usually have jet or rocket engines, this does not pose as much of an issue. On the other hand, since they are designed to support planes during their takeoff or landing runs, they can withstand a vastly higher ground speed than rover wheels, needing over 200 m/s to break.

In prior versions, the LY-10 Small Landing Gear was a physicsless part with no mass or drag. However, as of version 1.0.5, retracting the wheel makes a noticeable reduction in drag.

As of the 0.23 update, the LY-10 Small Landing Gear has the ability to steer, allowing sharper turns on the ground. This can be toggled either through tweakables or in flight.

This landing gear consumes a large amount of electric charge when steering. It is not good for changing direction quickly, and barely steers at all when there is no electric charge remaining. If multiple wheels are used in a design, the SPH automatically turns off steering on all but one wheel. To improve steering capability, it is sometimes useful to manually reactivate and invert the steering on the rear wheels. On the other hand, the brakes are significantly better than the LY05 Steerable Landing Gear‎.
