The HG-5 High Gain Antenna is a deployable antenna, used to connect to CommNet and transfer science. It is a relay antenna; it can boost signals from other vessels, bouncing them back to KSC. It is deployable, and must be deployed before use.

It is the weakest relay antenna, weaker than the RA-2 Relay Antenna.

Usage

Relay antennae are able to bounce communications from probes back to Kerbin. If a vessel with a relay antenna has a CommNet connection to Kerbin, then any nearby craft with a connection to the relay vessel will be able to connect to Kerbin through the relay. This allows probes far outside their antenna range, as well as probes obstructed by celestial bodies, to communicate with KSC.

The HG-5 High Gain Antenna is the first relay antenna unlocked in the tech tree. With a level 1 Tracking Station, it can communicate with KSC from beyond Minmus' orbit. This makes it well suited to early Mun or Minmus relay networks, providing connection to probes orbiting the far side of these moons. In addition, it can be used as a cheap, low-power relay around other planets (such as Duna), connecting to a more powerful relay vessel (such as one using a RA-2 Relay Antenna) to provide greater coverage.

In addition to its relay capabilities, the HG-5 can be used as a normal antenna, transmitting science and providing connection to KSC. In this role, it acts like a stronger Communotron 16; it must be deployed before use, and can be broken and repaired.

The HG-5 is combinable; placing multiple antennae on a vessel will increase its overall antenna power. However, note that only relay antennae count towards a vessel's relay antenna power.

Unlike the Communotron 16 and the Communotron 16-S, the HG-5 is not a physicsless part; it has its own mass and drag. This means that a single HG-5, mounted on the side of a spacecraft, will imbalance the craft's center of mass (and may result in instability when firing the engines).

Trivia

  • Despite being called a high-gain antenna, the direction of the antenna doesn't matter in the stock game.
