The RA-15 Relay Antenna is an antenna, used to connect to CommNet and transfer science. It is a relay antenna; it can boost signals from other vessels, bouncing them back to KSC.

It is a medium sized relay antenna, more powerful than the RA-2 Relay Antenna, and weaker than the RA-100 Relay Antenna. It is the relay equivalent of the Communotron HG-55.

Usage

Relay antennae are able to bounce communications from probes back to Kerbin. If a vessel with a relay antenna has a CommNet connection to Kerbin, then any nearby craft with a connection to the relay vessel will be able to connect to Kerbin through the relay. This allows probes far outside their antenna range, as well as probes obstructed by celestial bodies, to communicate with KSC.

The RA-15 is a medium strength antenna. It can communicate consistently with the inner planets, as well as Dres; with a level 3 Tracking Station, it can also reach Jool and Eeloo. Two RA-15 relay probes can connect to each other from a distance of 15 Gm, approximately the distance from Kerbin to Kerbol.

In addition to its relay capabilities, the RA-15 can be used as a normal antenna, transmitting science and providing connection to KSC. In this role, it acts like the Communotron HG-55, having the same strength and range; however, when transmitting science, its transmission speed is a quarter that of the HG-55, and it uses twice as much electricity per Mit of data.

Because the RA-15 is a static antenna, it is much more durable than deployable antennas when active; unlike a deployed antenna, it cannot be broken by aerodynamic forces. This makes it a reasonable choice for probes that must pass through an atmosphere (i.e. a large Duna lander).
