Usage
The Mk1 Cockpit is generally found at the front of the craft and can house one Kerbal crew member. It's especially useful for IVA flights because its large glass canopy offers a wide field of view; however, it cannot mount an inline parachute because it lacks a frontal node and is less useful for rockets because it's heavier than the Command Pod Mk1.
Along with the Mk1 Inline Cockpit, it is one of two Mk1 (1.25m) cockpit-style command pods. They are heavier than traditional command pods (like the Command Pod Mk1), but have higher impact tolerances and better IVA views. While this makes them less useful for spacecraft, they work well for vessels designed to work in atmosphere or land horizontally (like spaceplanes).
In 1.0.5 a "docking mode" was added. When the screen is clicked, the IVA view moves to a location behind the seat, looking up through windows designed to look at a docking port directly above the craft.
Kerbals can enter and exit the Mk1 Cockpit through the door on the bottom left of the cockpit, or through the “Transfer Crew” option. On most aircraft, the cockpit will be raised above the ground, so a ladder is helpful for allowing access.
